QUESTION:
How do I care for my sterling silver, gold plated and/or rhodium plated jewelry?

ANSWER:

STORING YOUR STERLING SILVER, GOLD PLATED OR RHODIUM PLATED JEWELRY:

Oxygen and moisture in the air will tarnish sterling and/or plated jewelry, so it's important to properly store your jewelry to help minimize the oxidation process. Here are a few storage tips:

  • Store in an area with low humidity (no bathroom storage).
  • Store each piece in an airtight bag (i.e. Ziploc).
  • Place a packet of silica or piece of chalk in the storage bag.
  • For Necklaces and Bracelets: Keep clasps and closures unhooked to avoid moisture buildup.

WEARING YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELRY:

Tip: You can avoid tarnish by wearing your jewelry often! The natural oils in your skin will actually help protect and clean the jewelry. However, there are certain activities that can cause your jewelry to lose its luster quickly! You should remove your jewelry before doing any of the following:

  • Working Out
  • Swimming
  • Showering
  • Cleaning
  • Sunbathing
  • Applying Hairspray or Hair Products
  • Putting on Lotion and Makeup

CLEANING YOUR STERLING SILVER, GOLD PLATED OR RHODIUM PLATED JEWELRY:

Even the best-cared-for jewelry will sometimes require cleaning. Polishing your jewelry will typically be the best way to clean it. Be sure to do the following:

  • Use a non-abrasive cloth to avoid scratching.
  • Move to a new section of the cloth regularly.
  • Avoid areas that are intentionally oxidized as part of the design.
  • Do not rub in a circular pattern, instead follow the grain of the metal if possible.
  • Keep It Dry. The fastest way to tarnish your jewelry is by contact with moisture and liquids (i.e. soap and lotions, etc.) Use a anti-tarnish wipes, cloth or cleaner to keep your natural silver jewelry looking fresh.

For natural silver and silver-plated jewelry: Avoid excessive rubbing to keep from wearing away the finish.

    • TIP 1: Use dish soap: Mix a few drops of dish soap, like Dawn Liquid Dish Soap, with warm water. Dip a soft lint free cloth in the solution and use it to rub the silver to remove the tarnish. Rinse with cool water and gently buff dry with another soft cloth.

    • TIP 2: For heavier tarnish, mix three parts baking soda to one part water. Wet the silver and apply the paste with a soft-lint free cloth. Rinse well and buff dry.
